Improv is folklore - a methodology passed from city to city and generation to generation. The beauty of folklore is implicit; the flaw seems to be as things are passed and "operator"ed, we lose important parts of the truth of the form. From the birthplace of longform improvisation, iO performer and faculty member Tara DeFrancisco comes to teach intended structure you may be missing to give the form more clarity, and the creative leaps and freedoms you might be missing to bring it incredible beauty. Expect fun, theory talk, getting up on your feet in scenework, and more love for comedic art.

TARA DEFRANCISCO is a decorated performer and instructor for the iO, Second City, and ComedySportz theatres in Chicago, Illinois. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she made the move to pursue improv after college and became lucky enough to call it her full-time profession. Tara toured for 3 years for SC, plays in the ComedySportz Mainstage show, and can be seen in the improvised musical The DelTones, weekend house team Chaos Theory, and occasionally in the Armando Diaz Theatrical Experience & Hootenanny at iO Theatre. Hailed as the “Funniest Person in Chicago“ by the Free Press, Top 25 in Curve Magazine, and one-to-watch in Time Out Magazine, she was recently awarded the Top 50 Performers in Chicago by New City - one of only three improvisers to receive the nod. Just this September, Tara was lucky enough to be named Top 100 US Comedians by Chicago Magazine. Improv is not only just the greatest, but the tenets have become her greatest mantra for life.
